SATYANARAYAN KATHA CHAPTER 5
(The tale of King Tungadhwaj –
evil and unwanted suffering for not accepting Prasad
due to high self-esteem)

Sut started another tale which he asked the sages to listen. 1

Once there lived a king named Tungadhwaj. He used to be engrossed rearing his citizens. He also benefited the consequences of refusing to accept the Prasad. 2

Once day the king went into the forest to hunt. There he hunted down a variety of animals. Tired, he approached the roots of a banyan tree with a view to rest. Nearby he saw Satyanarayan pooja being conducted. 3

Satisfied cowherds with their friends and relatives were performing this pooja. Even noticing the humble pooja being carried out, the self centred egoistic king did not go near the cowherds nor did he greet them. 4

After the pooja the cowherds left some Prasad by the king and returned to enjoy their share of Prasad according to their wishes. 5

The king abandoned the Prasad and so became very unhappy. His one hundred children together with his wealth and fortune were all destroyed. 6

“I feel certain that Lord Satyanarayan has destroyed all my belongings so I must go to that place where Satyanarayan pooja was being conducted” and so deciding, the king went to meet up with the cowherds. 7

Then the king performed Satyanarayan pooja with utmost respect and devotion along with the cowherds. 8

Thus with the grace of Satyanarayan the king once again acquired children, wealth and fortune. Thereafter he enjoyed the benefits of this earth and finally departed to the land of Golden Age (satyalok). 9

Any person who performs this mammoth Satyanarayan pooja and listens to the beneficial tales of Satyanarayan, by the grace of Satyanarayan that person finds wealth and fortune. 10

One who is poor will find wealth, one who is tied down or stressed out will find contentment. One who is fearful will be free from fear. 11

That is the truth and there is absolutely on doubt in that truth. That person will enjoy the fruits of their devotion and earn their place in Satyalok. 12

Oh Brahmins! I have told you about Satyanarayan’s observance of vows which if properly executed will relieve one from all melancholy. 13

In present days (Kaliyug), Satyanarayan pooja is very beneficial. Some people call him Kal, some call him Satya Parmeshwar. Some call him Satyanarayan and others call him Satyadev. 14

The very same Satyanarayan Lord Vishnu beholds many different appearances so as to fulfil everyone’s wishes. 15

During Kaliyug, Satyanarayan will continue to remain as Observance of Vows. Always has been and always will be. 16

All you supporters of sages, whoever will read Satyanarayan stories on regular basis will shed their sins by the grace of Satyanarayan. 17

All you sages let me tell you the fate of some of those who observed the vows in the past: 18

The poor Brahmin who became ever happy (Shatanand) reincarnated as Sudama Brahmin. He poured his heart into Lord Krishna and obtained liberation. 19

The woodcutter (Bhill) reincarnated to be Guhraj who served Lord Ram before obtaining liberation. 20

King Ulkamukh became King Dashrath (Earthly father of Lord Ram) and in exchange for his required earthly actions, he was rewarded liberation. 21

Sadhu Vanik, the believer in truth and having full faith in his astral beliefs sacrificed his own son by mutilation with a saw was rewarded liberation. 22

King Tungadhwaj became sage Manu. He conveyed Lord’s message by spreading the good word. He was thus rewarded liberation. 23

Thus concluded herewith is the fifth chapter of Satyanarayan story from the REVA section of the epic, SKANDHAPURAN.
Praise be to Lord Shree Satyanarayan.
